Mentoring Students

Much learning can take place when students leave the confines of the classroom.  Years ago my broadcast professor asked me to be his photographer on a trip to Ethiopia.  I spent two weeks there with him shooting more than 15 hours of video footage. The skills I learned on that one trip had an immense impact on my future career in the TV industry.

The story below was written and produced by one of my former students, Sarah Martin. I accompanied her on an Honor Flight to Washington D.C. to help her with the filming of several dozen U.S. military veterans who went to see the WWII Memorial for the first time.

Martin now works as a reporter and fill-in anchor at the ABC news station where I got my first start, KTVX in Salt Lake City.

In this next inspiring story shot, written, and produced by two of my former students, they asked me to voice the narration.

At the end of each semester for my intermediate broadcast students, I created a video montage of their reports to show how far they had progressed in their reporting. There were always some tears when I showed the video on the final day of class.
